A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this incident,” declared the head of state.
The official reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's economic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a significant increase of its duties in public projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled persistent apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was proposed pending a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in full adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these vital undertakings.
