Trans director Sam Feder's latest film "Heightened Scrutiny" provides a compelling dual viewpoint – simultaneously an personal profile of a prominent transgender activist and a sharp analysis of journalistic reporting surrounding transgender existence.

Legal Struggle at the Supreme Court

The film follows ACLU attorney Chase Strangio as he gets ready for oral arguments in the important highest court case US v Skirmetti. These arguments occurred in December 2024, with the court eventually ruling in favor of Tennessee's case, essentially allowing limitations on healthcare for trans young people to stay in effect across numerous US territories.

We produced Heightened Scrutiny in only 16 months, explained Feder during an interview. In comparison, my earlier film Disclosure took me five years, so this was very accelerated. Our goal was to stimulate discussion so people would understand more about the case.

Human Narrative Amid Political Struggle

While Feder provides a thorough examination of how mainstream news organizations have spread anti-trans narratives, the film's greatest accomplishment may be its captivating portrayal of Strangio. Normally a cautious attorney in public appearances, Strangio reveals his humanity throughout the documentary.

That was a substantial challenge, to reveal parts of my life to a filmmaker that I had worked hard to keep private, explained Strangio. Feder told me he wanted the next generation to know that we fought, to see what was done in service of these struggles for our basic existence.

Varied Perspectives in the Struggle

To enhance Strangio's narrative, Feder features various transgender activists, including prominent leaders from journalism and entertainment. This film also includes viewpoints from non-trans advocates who examine how respected media outlets have participated to damaging portrayals of trans individuals.

The viewpoint of transgender young people key to the court battle is shown through a impressive young student named Mila. Audiences initially witness her speaking out for her peers at a school board meeting, with subsequent footage showing her demonstrating for transgender rights outside the highest court.

Intimate Scenes Beyond the Courtroom

Heightened Scrutiny also includes emotional moments where Feder steps outside the constant political battle, such as scenes of Strangio vacationing in Italy and receiving a tattoo featuring verses from activist Pauli Murray's poem "Prediction."

The tattoo sequence is among my most cherished sections in the movie, explained Strangio. Being tattooed is practically like a meditative process for me, to be totally engaged in my body and to view it as a vessel for things that are meaningful to me.

Physical Identity and Portrayal

Feder's attention to carefully showing Strangio adding to his body art underscores that this film is fundamentally about trans bodies – not only those of young people who confront prohibition of their right to live authentically in their own bodies, but also the bodies of the various interviewees who are featured in the documentary.

I produce films with a message, and part of that is picking people who are outstanding and eloquent enough to sustain the camera, shared Feder. Whenever people ask me what they should dress for an interview, my response is anything that makes you feel confident. This is crucial to me – as trans people, we have difficulties so much with our appearance.

Impact and Hope

A key aspect that makes Feder's works shine is his obvious ability for making his trans participants feel comfortable, recognized and appreciated. This approach creates authentic chemistry between Feder and Strangio, allowing the filmmaker to realize his aim of presenting Strangio as a complete person and leaving a record for posterity of how persistently he and others have fought for trans rights.

I don't want people to find themselves in a state of constant hopelessness because of what the law is denying us, stated Strangio. I want to be in a process of using the law to lessen harm, but not to turn it into some sort of conduit for our freedom aspirations. State bodies is not going to be the reflection through which we see ourselves. Trans people are that reflection, and it's extremely crucial that we keep having that discussion alongside dialogues about pushing against these policies and practices.
