China's Figure Skaters Under Investigation After Displaying Prop Weapon at Competition

ISU officials are conducting a formal inquiry following two Chinese figure skaters were seen with an object resembling a toy ballistic missile at a grand prix figure skating event.

Broadcast video showed the skaters waiting with a sizable prop shaped like a missile labeled “DF-61” while waiting for their scores in the “kiss and cry” zone during the event.

The DF-61 represents a new Chinese-made ground-launched long-range weapon capable of carrying nuclear weapons, which was displayed at a military parade last month.

“The ISU have acknowledged that an inappropriate soft toy appears to have been one of the objects thrown on to the rink by spectators after a routine at the ISU Figure Skating Grand Prix Cup of China event,” the ISU stated via a release.

The item was then handled by the athletes who had just performed. We apologizes for this occurrence and will investigate further.”

Ren and Xing finished in eighth place of 10 pairs during the ice dancing competition, with the victory going to the American pair from the US.
